Urban Agriculture in Las Piñas

According to FAO and NASA, by the year 2050, nearly 80% of the earth’s population will reside in urban centers. Applying the most conservative estimates to current demographic trends, the human population will increase by about 3 billion people during the interim. An estimated 109 hectares of new land (about 20% more land than is represented by the country of Brazil) will be needed to grow enough food to feed them, if traditional farming practices continue as they are practiced today.

Access to nutritious food, both economically and geographically, is another perspective in the effort to locate food and livestock production in cities. With the tremendous influx of world population to urban areas, the need for fresh and safe food is increased.

The Community Food Security

Coalition (CFSC) defines food security as: All persons in a community having access to culturally acceptable, nutritionally adequate food through local, non-emergency sources at all times.

In Las Pinas City, Senator Cynthia Villar has intensified the promotion of urban agriculture in its 20 barangays. Launched in February 5, 2015 with no less than the Secretary of Agriculture Proceso J. Alcala as special guest, the program has now urban gardens in schools, barangays and homeowner's association areas. In fact, a contest to name the first round winners was completed in May 14, 2015 during the occasion of the Las Pinas City Food Fest.
