Urban Agriculture 2015

At the Launch of the Urban Agriculture Program of the Department of Agriculture held at the BF Resort Tree Park in Las Piñas City with Secretary Proceso J. Alcala, Asec Paz Benavidez II of the Bureau of Plant and Atty Benjo Tabios of BFAR as special guests. The event was hosted by Senator Cynthia A. Villar and Mayor Imelda Aguilar of Las Piñas City. The challenge is to grow pinakbet vegetables, lettuce, greens, fresh herbs directly at the open spaces in the city. A model Aquaphonics pond that has grown red tilapia with a 6x6 square meter lot can be replicated, says BFAR Region 4-A Director Mimi Manalang. Urban Cities like Las Piñas buy more than 60% of its food in nearby rural farms while they can be produced in their backyards and close to home, all year round. Also present is RED Vilma Dimaculangan of Region 4.

In land distribution networks are dependent on frequent diesel truck deliveries. Ecologically grown vegetables and fruits are very difficult to obtain. Pesticides are used on crops and often undeclared nor controlled. Availability of food supply, income generation and starting a healthy lifestyle are best reasons to start an urban garden. An urban city can create a healthier living environment. By providing 100% of food served at home, in schools and other institutions from ecological sources. This is a difficult challenge. But can be done. This message was delivered by the DA Secretary and Senator Villar to the invited residents and associations coming from the 20 barangays of the City.,
