Senator Cynthia Villar, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, and Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, visited the General City Fish Port Complex last April 7 at 6:30 in the morning.
The visit was intended to observe the condition of the local fishermen. They also looked at the tuna operations in the area. Villar and Alcala also took the opportunity to talk to the tuna fishermen present during the visit.
They also visited Philbest Canning Corporation to check on the situation of the tuna canning industry in the city.
In the afternoon, a public hearing was held to discuss the proposed amendments on the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998. During the consultation, various members of the fishing industry were able to share their insights and suggestions on the matter.
General Santos City is regarded as the Tuna Capital of the Philippines.
